G’Day Cobbers

Happy Australia Day for tomorrow!

“Give me a home among the gum trees,
with lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a kangaroo.
A clothes line out the back, verandah out the front,
and an old rocking chair.”
Bob Brown and Wally Johnson

Since this weekend is all about donning your best pair of double pluggers for the obligatory BBQ we thought we would put the spotlight on some of the botanical wonders this country of ours has. I’ll do my best to keep the ‘straylian’ slang to acceptable levels

When we first started Woohoo Skincare there weren’t many native Australian ingredients available. Macadamia Nut Oil, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree oil and Kakadu Plum were easy to find, but they don’t even scratch the surface of what this sunburnt country has to offer.

All we have to do is to look to Australian Aboriginal culture to see that there’s some pretty incredible plants – and many with powerful medicinal benefits – that we seem to be overlooking!

It seems strange that we don’t make better use of our native flora for taking care of ourselves. When you think about it why don’t we have a desert lime tree instead of a lemon tree in the backyard?

I’ll get back to the point before I get carried away.

Native Australian Extracts by Australians

Luckily for us there are some great people making native Australian extracts and now it is becoming too hard to choose which ones to use

We get our extracts from some very clever people who are leading the way in new technology. They developed a cellular level extraction process. Sounds complicated but the result is an extract with superior potency and bioactivity, which is good news or our skin.

We could ramble on about these Australian extracts all day long. But today we’ll stick to just 3 so we don’t make you late for your BBQ date.

Quandong

Quandong

Australia’s wild peach. It was staple food for Aboriginal people but more importantly it was a revered for its medicinal properties. Quandong has been found to have anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is a great wound healer. Its high content of the antioxidant Rutin strengthens capillaries and slows the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Less dark circles and less fine lines!

Emu Apple (Muntries)

These native berries have up to 4 times more antioxidants than blueberries. They are perfect for correcting oxidative damage caused by the sun. They also contain glycosides which hydrate the skin and help the skin more effectively absorb nutrients.

Illawarra Flame Tree (also known as the Kurrajong)

The cellular level extraction process now lets us utilise this amazing flower for skin conditioning. It contains flavonoids which are more potent that Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Flame tree stimulates collagen production and protects against premature ageing.

You can find these great Australian extracts and others in the Perfectly Happy Light Anti-Oxidant Cream and the Happily Ever After Vitamin C Eye Serum (and our upcoming Rich Repair Cream too!).

Australian Made Campaign

We are proudly (and officially) Australian and owned. This Australia Day long weekend, the Australian Made Campaign is helping raise the awareness of small Australian businesses that do big things.

There are some amazing people out there punching well above their weight.

The folk at Australian Made say that if every Australian replaced one item in their weekly shop with a locally made or grown alternative, we would see a tangible improvement to living standards across the country – for the benefit of all.

And we think that sounds pretty neat So please keep an eye out for the green and gold kangaroo.

They have an all natural superfood mix that you add to your smoothies to turn them into super-smoothies! (I think I have been spending too much time playing superheros with Mr. 3 because that sounded terribly awesome to me).

We have a limited number of Blend samples to give away (35 to be exact) so we’ll be including them with the first 35 orders placed (click here to shop).

To finish we’d like to share some of the beautiful words from Dorothy Mackellar’s famous ‘My Country’

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand
though Earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.
